G.I.R.L.S. Power Camp

AN EMPOWERING EXPERIENCE FOR GRADE 8 GIRLS IN OUR COMMUNITY!

Growth. Independence. Respect. Leadership. Self-Esteem

G.I.R.L.S. Power Camp provides a unique opportunity to bring together young girls in a 3-day workshop that is centered around positive body image, healthy relationships, self-esteem, making the transition to grade 9, and creating connections. Held at Camp Trillium, we are able to host the girls for an overnight experience, and provide opportunities to learn self-defense, yoga, and even try a high ropes course!

G.I.R.L.S. Power Camp would not be possible without our amazing volunteer facilitators each year.  We recruit & train approximately 25 young women from the ages 16-25 each year to help us lead the camp activities.  These facilitators act as mentors to the campers and are an invaluable component of the program.

Our dream is to find sufficient and permanent funding to make it possible for all grade 8 girls to have this empowering experience!

G.I.R.L.S. Power Camp Focuses On…

o Healthy choices

o Positive body image

o Self-esteem

o Healthy eating & active living

o Healthy relationships

o Personal safety

o Transition to grade 9

Program activities are developed to build self-esteem and confidence among the participants and to illustrate the links between young women and the community.

Program leaders work with campers to develop critical thinking skills in order that they may make informed choices, and discuss young women’s issues such as body image, peer pressure and sexism in a constructive and supportive manner.

This non-funded program is operated by Haldimand & Norfolk Women’s Services and couldn’t run without our many community volunteers & supporters.

Funding provided by an Ontario Trillium Foundation grant [2007-2010].
